Useful And Essential Facts About Foam Cutting Wires

By Frances West

Foam finds use in a wide range of applications, including insulation and cushioning. However, foams are usually produced in huge sheets that cannot be used in such sizes. That is why they have to be reduced to smaller sizes that can be used easily. Reducing foams to smaller sizes involves the use of foam cutting wires. These are wires that are designed specifically for use to cut foams into different shapes and sizes.

Several forms of foam can be found nowadays. The two commonly used types are expanded polystyrene and extruded polystyrene foams. EPS and XPS abbreviations are used in reference to the two types of forms respectively. EPS are comprised of small beads and have varying weights, thicknesses, and strengths. The differences in weight, strength, and densities create different sub-categories of foams.

The EPS foams find many uses in insulation of electrical devices that are being shipped. The XPS foams on the other hand can be found in different strengths and are also smooth. The foams have many applications in padding packages and wall insulation in homes. Therefore, they are available commonly in building supply stores and in packaging supply outlets.

There are usually tools which are used to fit foam chopping wires. There is a handle on the tool that is held by the user when cutting through the foam. Almost all tools can function as cutters for a broad range of foams. However, it is important to first check manufacturer instructions which come along with the tools before using them in cutting through a particular kind of foam.

Manufacturers usually specify the kind of foams that their tools can be used to cut. Using the tool on the wrong kind of foam can usually cause damage to the tool. In other cases, it may cause accidents such as burns. One should also follow all the user instructions that manufacturers provide when using the tool. This is important in order to avoid safety hazards that may result.

All types of foam cutting tools depend on heat to complete the cutting process. The cutting wires are normally heated using resistive heating technique. Wires with high electrical resistance are normally used in these tools. This is because the wires have to convert electrical energy into heat energy needed for cutting. When the wire heats, it can cut through any foam easily. These tools use mains electricity to function.

Fumes are normally produced when foams are being cut. The fumes are made of water vapor and carbon dioxide mostly although there might be other gasses in them. The toxic level of the fumes is lower due to their composition. However, it is still strongly advisable to conduct work in a space which has proper ventilation. It can be dangerous if carbon dioxide accumulates to large amounts.

There are various producers of these cutting tools available in the market. This also means that various makes exist for buyers to select from. It is important for one to be conscious of what qualities they need to look for in a tool before buying one. To be well informed beforehand, it is important to discuss with someone with prior experience in using this tools.
