4 Reasons Why Gas Flaring Can Cause A Dilemma

By Timothy Butler

Oil and gas industry have certainly improved and developed now in the modern era. If you traced its history, this had begun long ago already. Drilling of well was discovered around two thousand BC and which was used to generate saltwater. Until now, that technique is still useful even at this modern period since many industries now are venturing on oil, water and electricity. Furthermore, the products that were being generated are also useful for it could also drive the community. It certainly is beneficial to humanities, however, people still must maintain the safety of a working place so that the workers will not be harmed by some physical hazards whenever they work on compliant gas flares.

Society definitely needs those products that came from oil and gas productions. While doing the operation of producing those goods, flaring will happen. Flaring is the process of incinerating the waste gases by the use of flare stack or any combustion apparatus. It disposes those waste gases while discharging the emissions into the air. As you could see, this could certainly be used to reduce those contaminants like carbon dioxide.

The waste gases that were being incinerated are those air contaminants. Though it still releases the contaminants, it still helps in reducing it and making it less toxic. Anyhow, it cannot still protect the environment at all. No matter how it reduces the amount of the contaminants, it does not erase the fact that it releases those toxic.

But then again, sometimes that safety cannot be granted once some unexpected situation will take over. For example, when the tool has malfunctioned suddenly. Sometimes it would lead people to panic and make them face those physical hazards. For that reason, it became a problem. But aside from it, these reasons stated below are also considered.

First, it releases methane. Everyone know why global warming existed and methane is one of those greenhouse gases. Methane absorbs the sunrays and cause the atmosphere to be warmer. With more methane, global warming would become worse and you surely might not want that to happen and experience another dangerous calamity.

Second, it could also bring some harmful effects to humans. Those individuals who reside near the flared well will surely suffer. Mostly, they would experience some dizziness, nausea, headaches, loss of coordination and even vomiting. Some even reported how it could result to skin and lung problems with too much of exposure.

Third, it affects the agriculture. Acid rain is sometimes being linked with the activities being done through gas flaring. Acid rain can cause to acidify the lakes and damage the vegetation. As a result, the nutrients of the soil were depleted due to the contaminants. And in that case, the crops will lose its nutritional value.

Lastly, it brings pollution. Drilling oils and mud sometimes could end up going their way on the surface waters. With that, those locations become unfit for a habitat to people and animals. And like mentioned above, it also can pollute the air with its contaminants that were released.

People should find another way for this. There may be other alternatives which are less harmful. That way, the environment and humans would not encounter some harmful hazards.
