Moving Out And About With CDL Jobs

By Shirley Edwards

Human society was once nomadic, made of hunter gatherers who moved around in search of food. But human society eventually settled down, mainly near sources of water like rivers, and started to grow crops and raise livestock. Those settlements eventually started growing, on and on and on until many of them became the sprawling metropolises of glass and chrome today. But despite that settling, humanity never truly lost its nomadic spirit, that exploratory instinct. All that settling did was give the explorer a fixed point, a direction in which to go back. Humankind set out and explored, meeting different people with different cultures, and bringing back things like spices and silk. With that came international trade. Now, once those products reach their destination, they all have to be transported to various merchants. To do that, they are hauled via truck. In fact, trucking is one of many CDL jobs Salt Lake Utah City that are available to people.

A commercial drivers license, or a CDL for short, is just like any other license. Except that it signifies that person is properly certified to control a commercial vehicle. Now, commercial vehicles are different from automobiles. The principles behind their operation may be the same, but their sheer size means that the skills do not necessarily translate.

To qualify for a CDL, a person must have reached a certain age. This age is generally between eighteen and twenty one years of age. To get one, a person must pass a written test and perhaps a practical test.

There is only one location in which a CDL can be obtained. That location is the DMV, where all licenses for terrestrial vehicles are obtained. In the DMV, a person will have to fill out many forms and submit many documents.

There are many jobs available for someone with a CDL. Driving a truck and hauling goods from one city to another is one. But so is driving a delivery van and operating all kinds of commercial vehicles. A person can also be qualified to drive a bus.

Make no mistake about it, this is blue collar work. It is not the kind of work that makes a person rich. But it is honest work and the pay can be substantial. A trucker may never be able to afford a bright red sports car, but the money provided will be able to pay for things like a mortgage and for groceries.

But the people working such jobs will have to be prepared to work long hours. A long haul truck driver will especially need to be ready for such a schedule. Hauling goods and services from one city to another can take days if not weeks.

Now, long haul truckers have their own culture. Being on the road for so long, most of them have no one to talk to but each other, and this is usually done over the radio. Consequently, they have developed their own shorthand. Prospective drivers should take care to learn the slang.

Trade essentially worked like this, goods were produced in one country, an explorer from another would come by, trade their goods for the products of the producer, and then sail home and everyone involved in the expedition would be rich. In fact, it still works very much like that today, since airplanes are not yet strong enough to haul massive quantities of goods. As such, the import and export business is still very much reliant on boats and trucks.
