How The DiSC Profile Test Helps Choose Work Teams

By Rebecca Hamilton

This workplace program give HR personnel the ability to determine the personality traits that drive managers and employees to work together or not, based on the assessment. The DiSC profile test helps managers form more effective working teams based on their understanding of personality and behavioral traits. It helps the employee understand themselves as well. It is a well-trusted assessment instrument that allows HR people and managers form working teams.

Four areas of personality is addressed with the DiSC instrument. Understanding these areas enables the determination of which employees will make the best working pairs. It also lets the HR person determine who would make the best hire, or whether a person would not be suitable at all because they don't fit the company's idea of a what they want.

This system assesses the employee in four different areas, to find compatible personalities. These areas form the acronym DiSC, hence the name of the system. These four areas are: Dominance- How one addresses problems and challenges; Influence-How one interacts and influences people and contacts; Steadiness-How one deals with pace and consistency; Compliance-How one deals with procedures and constraints. These are factors that impact working relationships in a big way.

Human Resource persons can gain training in this assessment and what it means in the business world. They learn, with this training, how to pair people for the best working relationships. They also learn how to bring out the best of the person based on their scores. The training of the trainer includes: Complete instruction in the DiSC training model, identifying company goals and values, and gaining a full understanding of D, I, S, and C.

The program requires training before using. This can be gotten through several ways. One or more delivery methods is available. An online, live web presentation lets the person be involved in real time. Another online presentation is available to be used in the person's own time schedule. A self-study course allows those who work best independently to do so. Classes are also presented in person in several areas. In addition, a company can present the class in their own facility by making arrangements.

This system works extremely well in determining compatible pairs and work teams. Using the different traits of a person's personality, as refers to dominance, influence, steadiness, and compliance, when it is understood how these interrelate helps to choose compatible teams and helps to prevent less compatible pairs of employees. Getting the pairing correct will make pairing effective.

Not only is the HR person more aware of the different traits, the person involved also learns more about themselves. Knowing about their different traits helps them understand how they work. Exploring the traits of dominance tells them that competitive and determined are traits, as opposed to cautious and agreeable. Each trait has opposites, having sixteen traits for each part of the model. For example, in the area of influencing, optimistic and trusting is opposed to suspicious and skeptical. It is easy to see that these traits must be paired just right to making a working relationship compatible.

There are no negative traits. The way a person uses those traits determines their working relationship. The pairing of compatible pairs or teams gives a viable team. It is important for the HR person to share with each person their personality trait and to determine how each will work together. Knowing their own personality can help them in their own relationship at work.
