By Jose West

Millwrights are craftsmen or tradesmen with specialty in installing, dismantling, repairing, reassembling, and moving machinery. Originally, they used to construct fulling mills, paper mills, sawmills, and flour mills made of wood with limited metal parts. They are considered to be the oldest engineers in history by some people. When in need of a qualified millwright Temple is a good place to check out.

Millwrights pass through a fairly simple route to qualify to work. The route involves formal classroom instruction as well as on-the-job training. Basically, the job of millwrights involves handling heavy equipment and machinery across various industries. They may work at construction sites, commercial sites, mining operations, manufacturing plants, and power plants among other places. Physical labor is involved in most of the work. As such, to handle the job, physical fitness is a mandatory requirement.

There are a few basic requirements that one must meet for legal purposes in order to qualify to work as a millwright. In terms of age, one needs to be at least 18 years of age. However, those who are 17 years can also join an apprenticeship program if they have a written consent from their parents. This field does not have any maximum age limit. People choose when to retire on their own.

In the US, people without legal residence or citizenship cannot join an apprenticeship program. Thus, it is best to acquire the status of a citizen or a legal resident before joining an apprenticeship program. The ability to read, write, and understand English is also needed to work in this field. After high school, one should join a training program at a technical school, vocational school, or community college. However, this is not mandatory since one is free to join an apprenticeship program directly after high school. Completing a technical program helps to better the chances of finding a job. It is possible to attend technical training and an apprenticeship program at the same time.

In technical programs, learner gain knowledge in blueprint reading, mill maintenance, occupational job searching, welding, industrial math, and hydraulics. There are also additional skills that one may need to have on the job. It is best to build such skills while still on training.
