Some Things To Consider When Choosing Mouthguards

By Gregory Fisher

For those who are taking up martial arts such as jiujitsu, muay thai, or karate, it is important to have a mouthguard ready for the competitions and the sparring sessions. Now, this piece of equipment is extremely crucial because it can act as a sort of dental plan for martial artists. With mouthguards, it is possible to keep the teeth protected even after being hit by a punch or a kick.

Now, the thing about these pieces of equipment is that they come in so many different types that it might be hard for beginners to choose the right one. For that, they would need some sort of buying guide to help them out. This short little buying guide will enable beginners to choose the best mouthguard for his or her needs.

Now, one has to begin with the size and fitting because that is the most obvious. In order to get the best fitting, one would have to find out which mouthguard is the most comfortable to use while moving around a lot. From choosing between the looser type and the tighter type, it is best to get the tighter type of mouthguard so that it can fit well.

Now the thing about size or fitting is that it may harm the fighter if it is chosen wrong. The mouthguard that is way too fight will feel extremely uncomfortable and may actually affect overall performance while fighting. On the other hand, one that is too loose may actually give the risk of the mouthguard falling out of the mouth while the sparring session ensues.

Another thing to consider would be the shock absorber. The shock absorber is extremely important because that is the feature that would actually protect the teeth from much of the impact due to a right cross or a hook punch. In order for the mouthguard to have a nicer shock absorbing feature, it is recommended that one get a bulkier type.

Now, the biggest disadvantage of having a very bulky mouthguard would be discomfort. While a bulky mouthguard generally has a really good shock absorbing feature, it may not be good for small mouths. The best thing to do would be to get a custom mouthguard with the right type of bulk for shock absorption but at the same time a fitting size.

The final thing that one will want to take into note would be the design. It is not as important as the previously mentioned factors, but it does play a role in looking pretty cool though. So whenever one would pick the mouthguard, the three things to take into consideration are color, shape, and design.

Now, for those who are into martial arts, here are the few things to take into consideration when buying a mouthguard. The mouthguard is an extremely important part of the arsenal of a fighter that is why it is always good to buy one that is suitable. With the right kind of mouthguard, one will be able to protect his or her teeth from damage.
