Searching For A Firm For Global Shipping

By Patrick Wagner

A large number of people need to use a shipping company to send various items overseas. There are some important things that you need to think about before selecting a firm for global shipping. There are a lot of well established companies that are trading and a little care is needed when you are selecting a suitable company.

Many things can be sent via courier to a lot of destinations and these include documents, small packages, bulky crates and even animals. When selecting a suitable carriage company, it is essential that you try to get the best price by getting a quote from different companies. The fees you will be charged are going to vary depending on a couple of factors.

Shipping firms generally charge customers by the volume or weight of the item to be sent and you will need to calculate these. Small packages and paperwork can often be shipped using fixed prices and large heavier packages are charged per kilo. All of your items will need to be securely packaged prior to collection or drop off. Most shipping companies can supply the correct type of packaging for a small fee.

Things that will affect the price you are charged will include how quickly your packages need to be delivered and where to. Most carriers offer a same day service for urgent items and this can be expensive or you can choose a standard ten to fourteen day service. The majority of countries across the globe are accessible but there may be a few that are not and you can check this with your chosen company when booking.

When your item is collected or dropped at the depot, some important paperwork will be issued which you will have to read carefully and sign. These documents should be retained as they will list the destination address, details of the item and it will have some kind of serial number. The number will allow you to track your item online and follow its progress.

When you are calling firms for price quotes it is advisable to make a list of companies and contact as many as possible. The larger well known carriers are usually the best option but some of the small local companies are also worth a try. Some of these independent couriers will get a much better rate for a one off transaction as they send large amounts of freight they send with their chosen shippers.

One of the advantages of using an independent small firm is that you can pay your bill with cash or credit card. The majority of large firms will not accept cash payments and you will have to set up a trading account before you can use them. If you have a high volume of packages to be sent regularly it can be worth setting up an account as a better price tariff may be available.

Prior to sending your items is imperative that they are adequately covered by the correct type of insurance. Both the large businesses, and independent couriers will have transit cover which will be suitable or you can arrange your own. If you are sourcing your own insurance you will need the value of the items to be sent before getting a price.
