Selecting The Right Valves Types To Avoid Valve Modification Services

By John Nelson

In each pumping or piping system, there are valves that are needed to control the flow of liquids. Making the right choices on the types of valves to install the systems is essential for ensuring that they work properly. One of the ways of identifying the best valves is through evaluating the various types available to avoid hiring Valve Modification services in Houston TX.

The first type is the ball valves that are fitted in pipes. The position of the hollow ball-shaped disks that form the valves determines the flow of the fluid. Once the valves are aligned towards the side in which the fluid flows, then they are opened. If they are in a perpendicular position to the fluid flow, then they are closed, and the fluid does not flow.

Commonly termed as clock valves or plug valves, they use a cylindrical shape to control the flow of the liquid. When opened, the hollow is aligned with the inlet and outlet thus allowing the liquid to flow. However, when the valves close, the solid part of the shape comes in between the inlet and outlet thus inhibiting the flow of the liquid. That is used to block throttle or start the flow.

Another common option is the butterfly valves. They are very common mainly because they are light, high adaptable and are easy and quick to use. Their working mechanism is similar to that of the ball and plug valves. They, however, use the thin disk to control the flowing liquid rather than use the cylinder and ball shape in the plug and ball types respectively.

Another option is the gate valves which are also known as sluice valves. Such valves can only either be fully closed or fully opened. They use metal gates which are raised or lowered to open and close respectively. This type of valves is mainly used in taps when a constant flow of the liquid is needed, and if the liquid is considered adequate, it is easily closed. The valves have wedges inserted in the seats.

Some valves are solely created to reduce the amount of leaking fluids. One such type is the globe valve. They rarely have huge fluids leaks as they operate. Their working mechanism is similar to that of gate valves; that is the linear motion concept. However, they allow regulation of flowing liquid as well as use disks on the seats rather than wedges.

Other valve types work using the pinching mechanism. Such valves usually have a membrane made using a synthetic material that is pinched using a bar or gate to close the membrane and inhibit flow when closed. Common types of such valves are the pinch and diaphragm valves. Diaphragm types, however, are more preferred as they make a tighter seal.

For the best services, one should ensure that the right valves for the function intended are selected. In most cases, the liquid viscosity is the first fact that plays a major role when selecting the type of valves to use. Additionally, the valve characteristics should also examined. For example, how well they perform, their disadvantages and activities they are best suited.
