The Benefits Of Growing Cycads

By Nancy Phillips

Plants provide us with a lot of benefits. They are used for food, they can be used to enhance appeal and some may be used for medicinal use. As much as all these benefits are present many people still find that they cannot manage a garden or house plants because they lack time. A great alternative for this would be Growing Cycads, as they give the benefits of plants and are easier to maintain.

People usually think that to have property that is of high value one has to invest a lot of time in gaining that. Cycads are the exact opposite of that, as they are very easy to grow and their appearance is appealing to the eye. The best conditions to grow them would be in well-aerated soil and one that does not retain much water, as too much water will cause the roots of the plant to rot out.

As these plants grow slowly, it is important to make sure that their roots are not disturbed once they mature. This means that if they are being grown for the landscape, they should be transplanted when they are young. If they are being planted in the house, one should make sure that the plant never dries up, and watering should be done at least two times a week.

An important factor to keep in mind when growing the cycads is that there are several species of them, and each of them require different conditions in order to grow efficiently. People who have dealt with them before have understood the different species and how they behave to different conditions, and it is important to have this information so that plants are grown and cared for in the appropriate ways.

These plants can sometimes be used for food. However, there are specific species that can be used for food and these should be carefully researched. They may be used to feed poultry so chicken farmers are encouraged to grow some of the species. As much as they may be eaten, they should be consumed in reasonable amounts to eliminate developing side effects.

Other species are well known for their medicinal properties. Parts like stems and leaves may be gathered and used to make medical products. Young seeds can be collected and processed to produce oils which help in keeping the skin healthy. It is although important to know which types can make the medicines and it is also important to have a professional when making the medicines.

The leaves of some species have special fibers on them that are great for making mattresses and even material for making clothes. The fibers are also soft enough to be used in pillows, because they do not have side effects. Amenities like shopping baskets and fiber hats can be made from the leaves and they last long because of the toughness of the material.

Aside from all the benefits humans stand to enjoy from these plants, they also help in making the soil better by supplying it with nitrogen, which is important for the growth of plants. Their big strong stems can be used as construction material. These are plants that are facing extinction so in order to save them more should be grown.
